This course provides an overview of environmental management and policy with a strong focus on sustainable development. The overall aim is to identity the links between the natural environment and the human economy. In order to cope with resource scarcities and natural problems caused by human activity, environmental management needs to fulfil an interdisciplinary approach covering topics such as ecology, environmental economics and policy, and planning and social development. Participants will investigate how environmental governance and governance for sustainable development help to foster global environmental challenges.
The main topics of the course are:
- Principles of Environmental Management – a problem solving anthropocentric approach
- Sustainable Development – an integrative approach
- Defining the interface between Environmental Management and Sustainable Development – a systemic view
- Economics of the environment
- Valuing the environment – concepts and methods
- Environmental Policy – principles, strategies, and instruments
- Environmental Governance and Governance for Sustainable Development
- Evaluation and assessment methods
